The Boston Celtics entered Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks aiming to extend their dominance, having swept the Knicks 4-0 during the regular season. However, the Knicks had other plans, orchestrating a remarkable 20-point comeback to secure a 108-105 overtime victory at TD Garden, marking their first win over Boston this season.
Boston started strong, leading 61-45 at halftime, but their offense faltered in the second half. The Celtics set an NBA playoff record by missing 45 three-point attempts (via StatMuse), contributing to their scoring only 16 points in the fourth quarter. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 23 points, with Tatum adding 16 rebounds.

Despite their efforts, the Celtics couldn't withstand the Knicks' resurgence. Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby led New York with 29 points each, while Mikal Bridges made crucial defensive plays, including a game-sealing steal from Brown in the final seconds of overtime.
Postgame, Tatum was asked about the Celtics' lack of foul calls in the playoffs and how it prevented them from attacking.
"It's the playoffs," Tatum said. "We probably should just play without the refs, that's how physical it is."
Tatum, who had a strong start with 13 consecutive points in the first quarter, struggled in the latter stages, scoring only 10 points in the second half and overtime.
The Knicks' victory not only gave them a 1-0 series lead but also ended their losing streak against the Celtics this season. Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in Boston, where the Celtics will look to rebound and even the series.
