The Philadelphia 76ers stirred up the Boston Celtics by rallying from a 3-1 playoff deficit to send them packing earlier this year, and on Wednesday they went ahead and took one of the team’s top stars, too.
According to multiple reports, Philadelphia acquired forward Jaylen Brown from the Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.
The 6-foot-6, 223-pound Brown is coming off a season in which he averaged 28.7 points in 71 games for Boston. Brown is a five-time All-Star, a two-time All-NBA selection, and in 2024 he was named NBA Finals MVP.
Meanwhile, the 6-foot-8, 220-pound George played in just 37 games for Philadelphia last season, averaging 17.3 points per game.
The move comes just days after Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens discussed Brown’s importance to the team as trade rumors swirled.

“Jaylen Brown is a big part of us,” Stevens said on June 24 according to USA Today. “I’m never going to predict the future. Every indication, everything I think about over the last few years, has been building around those guys. You never know.
“But at the same time, the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he has always been,” Stevens added. “He has been amazing. He has been an amazing teammate and a great person to be around.”
The move splits up the Celtics’ two stars, leaving Jayson Tatum, who suffered a ruptured Achilles in 2024, to build around. For the Sixers, it gives the team another weapon to team with VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
