Jaylen Brown's old Joel Embiid comments resurface after shocking 76ers trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Jaylen Brown is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers in one of the most stunning trades of the NBA offseason, but one clip from his Celtics days is already making the rounds again.

Just hours after Boston agreed to send Brown to its longtime Atlantic Division rival, fans resurfaced a previous livestream in which Brown openly criticized new teammate Joel Embiid for one aspect of his game. While the comments were made years ago, they'll now take on a different meaning with Brown and Embiid preparing to share the floor as teammates.

Brown once called out Embiid for flopping

Before becoming teammates, Brown and Embiid spent years battling in one of the NBA's fiercest rivalries between the Celtics and 76ers.

During a previous Twitch stream, Brown was asked about flopping in today's NBA and didn't hesitate to mention Embiid by name.

"I mean, this is my personal opinion on basketball. Some of y'all might disagree, you know what I mean? But argue with your grandma. Flopping has ruined our game. Joel Embiid is a great player, one of the best bigs in basketball history. Flops."

The clip quickly began circulating again after news broke that Brown had been traded to Philadelphia. Despite the criticism, Brown also made it clear in the same comments that he considers Embiid "one of the best bigs in basketball history," making it more of a critique of playing style than an attack on Embiid's overall talent.

Brown joins Philadelphia after career-best season

The trade closes the book on Brown's remarkable 10-year run in Boston. The five-time All-Star helped lead the Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship and captured NBA Finals MVP honors during that title run. He leaves as one of the most accomplished players of the franchise's modern era.

Brown is also coming off the best individual season of his career.

With Jayson Tatum sidelined for much of the 2025-26 campaign while recovering from a ruptured Achilles, Brown became Boston's offensive centerpiece. He averaged career highs of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 71 games while shooting 47.7 percent from the field. He finished fourth in the NBA in scoring and sixth in MVP voting, cementing himself as one of the league's elite two-way stars.

Can Brown, Embiid and Maxey become title contenders?

Philadelphia is betting the answer is yes. The 76ers acquired Brown in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks, creating a new star trio alongside Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

On paper, Brown fills a major need as an elite wing scorer and defender who can ease some of the offensive burden on Embiid while giving Maxey another dynamic playmaker. The timing of the move is also notable. Philadelphia eliminated Boston in seven games during the first round of last season's playoffs after rallying from a 3-1 series deficit. Embiid averaged 24.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists during the series, while Brown carried much of the load for a Celtics team missing Tatum.

Any past comments between the two stars are likely to take a back seat once training camp opens. Winning has a way of changing narratives, and the 76ers will expect Brown and Embiid to quickly put their former rivalry behind them. Still, Brown's flopping remarks have resurfaced at an interesting time, giving fans one more storyline to follow as one of the NBA's newest superstar partnerships begins.
