With the reveal of one fateful legal action, Jayden Daniels turned the football world upside down on Thursday. It came to light that the current Washington Commanders star quarterback had his personal team send a cease-and-desist letter to LSU, his alma mater, with whom he won the Heisman Trophy in 2023, declaring that the school was no longer allowed to use his name, image, and likeness (NIL).
Why, you might ask? LSU had recently given out Daniels' old No. 5 jersey to top cornerback recruit D.J. Pickett. Thanks to former head coach Brian Kelly, Daniels was under the impression that his No. 5 jersey would never be used by LSU again, in a similar fashion to Joe Burrow's No. 9 never being issued again. The obvious difference between the two quarterbacks is, of course, that Burrow won both a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship with LSU in 2019.
New head coach Lane Kiffin obviously did not keep this promise, since he neither recruited nor coached Daniels, and here we have this whole silly mess. With a lot of folks online calling Daniels and his team out for what seems like petty behavior, the quarterback took to his social media to issue a statement for some much-needed damage control. He claimed his main focus is on the Washington Commanders and their coming 2026 season.
Yeah ... I'm not sure how many people will believe that to be the truth right now:
We'll see how this situation develops in the coming weeks. I can't imagine Daniels or his people want this to be a distraction that bleeds into either LSU's or the Commanders' season.
Washington's camp has seemed like it's pretty standard fare for the most part to this point. Unfortunately, though, starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil's triceps injury is a major blow to the Commanders' hopes of a huge rebound in 2026.
