Before he made a name for himself in sports media, Doug Gottlieb was an accomplished college basketball player at Oklahoma State who briefly played professionally in the United States and abroad.

Jason Whitlock was not. But the former ESPN personality knows about reinvention — and recognized a successful career transition when he saw one this week.

Gottlieb, now the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball program, has had much more success with the Phoenix in Year 2 than Year 1. They went 4-28 in Gottlieb’s first year (11th in the mid-major Horizon League) and are now 18-14 after beating Purdue-Fort Wayne on Tuesday.

Green Bay’s win over the Mastodons sent them to the Horizon League tournament for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

Congrats, Doug @GottliebShow! Great story. He bet on himself, went all in and it worked. Ya love to see it. https://t.co/ykV8SYWlc6

“Congrats, Doug @GottliebShow! Great story,” Whitlock wrote Thursday on X. “He bet on himself, went all in and it worked. Ya love to see it.”

Whitlock, host of the “Fearless” show, worked for ESPN from 2002-06. Primarily a columnist, he also appeared on screen on Jim Rome Is Burning and Pardon the Interruption.

Whitlock was briefly tabbed to launch The Undefeated (the ESPN website currently known as Andscape) before joining Fox Sports 1 in 2016.

Gottlieb helped launch ESPNU in 2005 before becoming a mainstay on SportsCenter and working as an analyst on ESPN’s college basketball coverage.
