Though the Los Angeles Rams have three division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers are unquestionably No. 1 on their list of enemies. Games against the 49ers come with added intensity.
That’s the feeling around the Rams’ building this week as the team prepares for a road game against the Niners on Sunday. The fact that San Francisco stunned the Rams in their first meeting of the season when Los Angeles was nearly a double-digit favorite only heightens the focus and anticipation for this matchup.
Jared Verse is only in his second season with the Rams so he hasn’t had much experience in this rivalry, but he already knows how meaningful these games are against San Francisco. He’s amped up for Sunday’s showdown in Santa Clara, admitting it means more after losing once to the 49ers already.
“Yeah, whenever you lose a game and you’re lucky enough to get them again, especially when they are in our division, it means a little bit more,” Verse said. “Obviously, every game is the same, but it's just not even like, ‘Oh division rivals or this, that and the third, the 49ers just mean more.”
Even in his brief time within this bitter rivalry, Verse knows just how intense and physical Rams-49ers games are. Off the field, he keeps a different mindset during the week, joking that he told his college teammates and current 49ers defenders to leave him alone after they wished him a happy birthday.
“It's aggressive,” he said. “Fiske and I both have teammates from Florida State with Renardo Green and Tatum Bethune that went to Florida State with us. They are my brothers and everything like that, but they play for the 49ers. They texted me Monday or Tuesday, ‘Hey, happy birthday.’ I say, ‘Hey, thank you. Get off my phone you’re my opponent. I'm not messing with you this week. You’re my opponent like, simple as that.’ Even your best friends, even your brothers, it’s just different this week.”
The Rams badly need to beat the 49ers after losing to them in their first meeting, hopefully avoiding going 0-2 and giving San Francisco the head-to-head tiebreaker when it comes to divisional standings and playoff seeding. There’s no question players are focused and prepared. It just comes down to execution at this point.
