The NFL schedule release ruffled some feathers in the San Francisco 49ers' universe when the 49ers were given an apparently unfavorable slate of games compared to that of the Los Angeles Rams after the two clubs return from their season-opening bout in Melbourne, Australia.

According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan requested the Monday Night Football game after they get back from Australia. Instead, that game went to the Rams.

San Francisco returns home from their Thursday night game in Melbourne to play again Sunday afternoon against the Miami Dolphins at Levi's Stadium. The Rams, meanwhile, don't play again until Monday night, giving them a full extra day of rest before their Week 2 game.

The immediate benefit for the Rams is undeniable. That extra day off after the Australia trip should be valuable, even with the additional days off after a Thursday game.

However, the longer term schedule shows the 49ers got the better draw.

After returning from Melbourne, the 49ers get three consecutive home games. Then when they do travel they make the short flight north to Seattle. Then they get another home game in Week 6 before finally travelling to Atlanta for Week 7 on Oct. 25. That trip to Atlanta will be their first journey outside of the Pacific Time Zone since the season opener.

To make matters even better, the potential after-effects of cross-country travel are mitigated by the 49ers having a Bye week immediately following their first long road trip of the year. Then they get a home game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders after the Bye.

Meanwhile, the Rams are home against the New York Giants in Week 2 before hitting the road to play the Denver Broncos for Sunday Night Football in Week 3. That means a short week with travel to the altitude of the Mile High City. They immediately follow that up with a cross-country tip to face the Philadelphia Eagles for a 10:00am Pacific Time kickoff.

Things normalize a bit for LA after that. They come home for back-to-back home games, then a short trip to Las Vegas, then another home game before back-to-back road trips to Washington and Arizona leading up to their Bye week.

The Bye week is where the Rams really get hit hard because they won't get a true week off. They play the Green Bay Packers at home on Wednesday after their week off, shorting them multiple days away from the field. The Rams ultimately finish the year with a minus-six rest disparity, while San Francisco's lands at zero.

LA may get the more advantageous game in Week 2, but overall the 49ers should be happy they wound up with their schedule layout over what the Rams are dealing with in the longer-term aftermath of their trip to Australia.
