The Philadelphia 76ers made a surprising move at the deadline by sending Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and a handful of second-round picks. The second-year guard is having a down year compared to his rookie season, but he's also coming off a serious meniscus injury in his left knee.
President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey explained his reasoning for the McCain move on Friday. He stated that the Sixers wanted to use the picks they acquired from the Thunder to then move those picks out for a player who can help them win right now. Morey then added that such a move did not appear, and the Sixers were unable to add at the deadline.
McCain, now speaking with reporters in OKC at Thunder practice, admitted that he did not see a trade coming. It happened when the Sixers were on the bus in San Francisco and he went straight to Tyrese Maxey.
Furthermore, reporters also asked McCain about Morey believing he sold high on him in the trade with the Thunder. The second-year guard gave a laugh, but added that he and Morey did not have a chance to speak much.
McCain meant a lot to his Sixers teammates. In a 1-on-1 interview with Sixers Wire in Los Angeles, Kelly Oubre Jr. gave a lot of love to McCain as he wished him luck in his new situation with the Thunder.

Jared McCain on if he knew he’d get traded: “No. Not at all. We were on the bus to the airport and just got a call. I had no feeling. I didn’t think it was gonna happen to be honest. I got the call and went to Tyrese first. It was pretty emotional.” pic.twitter.com/CbRht7xoDm
