Japan have taken the lead in the figure skating team event ahead of the decisive men's free skating later on Sunday at the Milano/Cortina Winter Olympics.
The United States initially retained their lead after the pairs free skating, but the Japanese team now top the standings after Kaori Sakamoto's sparkling performance in the women's free skating.
Both nations are the top favourites to become champions. They are tied on 59 placement points, but Japan lead on the tiebreaker. The US won gold at Beijing 2022.
Sakamoto topped the women's singles with 148.62 ahead of Anastasiia Gubanova of Georgia, while the US were third with Amber Glenn.
The team event combines the four Olympic figure skating disciplines (men's singles, women's singles, pairs and ice dance) into a single event.
Skaters earn points based on their placement in each discipline, and the gold medals are awarded to the team that earns the most placement points.
Competition started on Friday and medals will be handed after the men's free skating later on Sunday.
US superstar Ilia Malinin will compete in the men's free skating after a below-par performance on Saturday, which saw him finish second.
He previously said he wasn't sure whether he would compete on the final day.
