Japan's Ami Nakai topped the figure skating women's singles competition at the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics after the short program on Tuesday.

Nakai had a score of 78.71 points to lead ahead of team-mate Kaori Sakamoto by 1.48 points. United States' Alysa Liu completed the top three.

Japan are in position for a podium sweep as Mone Chiba was fourth.

The free skating, after which medals will be handed out, is scheduled for Thursday.

There was shock for three-time US champion Amber Glenn, who was 13th after a catastrophic performance, in which one of her elements was invalid.

The women's singles, which comprises the short program and the free skating, is the last figure skating event at the Milan/Cortina Games.

An exhibition gala is scheduled for Saturday. The gala is not a competition, but an artistic performance with the stars of the Games.
