Jannik Sinner is into the Monte-Carlo semi-finals after a comfortable win over Felix Auger-Aliassime, keeping him in the hunt to reclaim the world number one spot.

His streak of consecutive sets won at Masters events had ended in his previous match against Tomas Machac, but Sinner returned to form quickly with a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-4.

Sinner is aiming for a third consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, having already secured the Sunshine Double by winning Indian Wells and Miami earlier this year.

He cited fatigue as a factor in his performance against Machac, pointing to the heavy schedule he’s faced recently. But following his win over Auger-Aliassime, Sinner said he was feeling much better physically.

Speaking in his on-court interview, Sinner said: “Yeah, you know, I feel like a step forward today. It was a very, very tough match.

“I knew that I had to get better in certain areas. The serve is not there yet, where I would love it to be, but all things considered, I’m very happy.

“Yesterday, I was very tired. I recovered very good in this night’s sleep. And yeah, of course, let’s see what’s coming tomorrow.

“But in any case, very happy to be back in the semis,” concluded Sinner. He also made the final four in Monte-Carlo last year but fell short against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

With the score level at 3-3 in the second set, Auger-Aliassime tried to lob Sinner, but the Italian read it perfectly, tracking back and connecting cleanly for an overhead from near the baseline to secure a break of serve.

Asked if it was a sign of confidence, Sinner replied: “No, I feel like, you know, in these shots, when you start with the intention to hit. You know, I don’t doubt. You know, I’d rather miss and then go for it than hoping at times.

“So it is a shot where we try to improve. It is a shot where we are working on a lot. Even though from outside it seems always an easy shot to smash – but it’s definitely not.”

Sinner added that he felt comfortable hitting his overhead thanks to cloudy conditions in Monte-Carlo – “today the weather,” he said. “You know with the clouds I feel like [I’m] a bit more confident to hit serve.

“When it’s blue sky for example I’m someone who struggles a bit more. But yeah I’m happy that I made it and now knowing that it went out and in a key moment as well.”
