per ESPN

just makes the RB pool a bit deeper

and I think Charles just ripped off another 35 yard TD run against ASU............

Crap...huge UT fan and he really could have used another year.

I think it's a mistake...should be available in rd 2 or 3.

Is he worth #16? Is he worth a 2nd? A third?

I just havent seen enough of him to make an opinion.

What I saw in the ASU game was big time speed -- like "this sweep is strung out and will lose yards ..... hey, how did he get around the corner" fast.

I also saw him step through some arm tackles, and make a couple nice moves in traffic. Just didnt see a bunch of between the tackles toughness.

duckjake-- any insight?

Where is Shogun?? He seems to have a good grasp on the college players. I just hope this kid is good enough to get picked before we come up and push another guy up to us.

Here I am. :)

We had a thread on him not too long ago. This was my opinion on him.

He has potential to do some damage, but I need more consistency from him and also needs to work on running between the tackles. I compare him to former Hurricane Clinton Portis. He would excel in a ZBS a la Denver, but I'm not sure how he'd work with a lead blocker.

He could jump up and be that first day pick with workouts and all, but I personally hope that he stays his senior year to polish up.

I'm surprised to hear he declared. Last I had heard he was going to stay. His biggest problem has been fumbling, no other complaints about him from UT fans. Fast as hell, can run between the tackles some, but isn't really a power back, more of a speed back with some power (more than Arrington). Would be a nice compliment to Edge. I'd think he will go in the 2nd round. I agree Cason and Charles in the first rounds would be nice.

I'm not sure about his frame in the NFL 6'1 205lbs...Pretty skinny for an every down back. I can't see him going in rd1 if Mendenhall declares. I see the backs as a clear 1,2,3 and then a cluster in the next tier with Jones, Charles and RIce slightly above the rest in that 4th tier.

1. McFadden
2. Stewart
3. Mendenhall

4. J.Charles/R.Rice/F.Jones/S.Slaton/M.Hart/T.Choice/C.johnson

Charles is too slight right now for the NFL. He'd be a great 3-4th round pick for the Cards because he needs at least 2-3 years to develop but he is so much faster than JJ that he'd make a perfect compliment to Edge and could be the guy we need to get that 300 yards or so good teams get from their #2 running back while he grows. So we use him as #2 for the next two years with Edge and have him ready to be #1 when Edge hangs it up after the 2009 season.

The problem for guys like Charles is that in the NFL the field is too small for them to turn the corner. Guys like Dansby and Pace are too big and close too fast for a field that has been the same size since defensive ends were 5'10" 185.

Has been for a long time. Just ask Leland McElroy.

Switch Mendenhall and Stewart and i'm with you. Mendenhall, i guarantee gets selected before Stewart. I'll take bets on that.

Charles in the second round? Maybe.

Charles on the second day? No hesitation, if we need a back.

Hey Shogun,
What do you think about Tony Temple from Mizzou? I think of him as a later round draft pick that could surprise a lot.

Temple's far too inconsistent, and he's not really much of an NFL-style back. He's too hesitant in hitting his holes. I've seen him with my Tigers for three years. I want to see him back in Columbia next year if his waiver is granted. I don't want to see him in the desert.
