Some surprising and concerning news came out regarding the Finals MVP when it was reported that New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson recently underwent surgery on his right forearm/wrist area and he'll have to rehab the surgery for at least the next two months.

Per the report, which came from Ian Bagley, the surgery is meant to address lingering discomfort in his forearm/wrist area which he played through during the Knicks Finals run, which makes Brunson's MVP winning performance during the playoffs that much more impressive.

Begley didn't report the specifics of when exactly Brunson's injury occurred or how long prior to the Finals he had been feeling discomfort, but now at least Brunson is looking ahead to an offseason of recovery in order to ideally be back in playing condition in time for the start of next season.

Putting the Injury Into Context

Given the nature of Brunson's size and how many physical battles he had to go up against in the playoffs as a whole and especially in the Finals just to get any movement on the court, it makes sense that some kind of injury would have arisen between the hard contact he suffered and the amount of effort he had to put in on the floor.

The forearm and wrist aren't ideal areas to have any kind of injury for a shooter such as Brunson, it is still better than any kind of lower body injury or discomfort that could prove to be further detrimental to any basketball player's career.

The fact that Brunson was dealing with any kind of injury while playing in the Finals truly puts his performance, including the 45 points that he scored in Game 5 to close out the series and deliver the Knicks their first championship in 53 years, all that more impressive and with the benefit of hindsight makes it that much more historic.

Looking Ahead

An offseason of recovery will be crucial for Brunson now. The work of last season may be done, but everything starts over again next season and the Knicks will start on the pursuit to defend their championship and possibly start the NBA's newest dynasty.

For them to succeed in that pursuit, they will undoubtedly need Brunson as their captain, their leading scorer and as someone who truly dictates the offense around.

He'll have essentially the entire offseason to recover and ideally by the start of next season, the NBA world will be able to a Brunson who is not only fresh off of a championship, but freshly recovered as well.
