Minnesota Vikings rookie linebacker Jake Golday is wasting no time preparing for the biggest opportunity of his football career, as he recently appeared in a workout video posted by 1of1skills on Instagram, putting together an intense training session as he continues ramping up ahead of his first training camp.
For a second-round pick expected to compete for significant defensive snaps early in his professional career, every practice session matters.
The 23-year-old has already built a reputation as a relentless worker dating back to his college days, and the latest video reinforces that notion as he transitions to the professional level.
Golday began his college career at Central Arkansas, where he steadily worked his way into a starting role after overcoming a torn meniscus early in his career. Following three seasons with the Bears, he transferred to Cincinnati and elevated his game even further against higher-level competition.
As a senior, Golday recorded 104 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups and a forced fumble while emerging as the leader of the Bearcats' defense. His performance earned him an 82.4 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, highlighted by an outstanding 90.6 run-defense grade that ranked among the nation's top linebackers.
At six-foot-four and 239 pounds, Golday has the size and strength to thrive in defensive coordinator Brian Flores' aggressive scheme. His ability to attack downhill, take on blocks and close rushing lanes makes him a natural fit in a defense that frequently asks its linebackers to pressure the quarterback and disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage.
While there is still room for development in pass coverage and processing next level offenses, Golday's athletic profile gives him a strong foundation. He turned heads during the NFL Scouting Combine by running a 4.62-second 40-yard dash while posting a 39-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot-5 broad jump, showcasing the explosiveness that appears to be a focus of his current offseason training.
The work displayed in his latest workout video suggests Golday is intent on arriving at training camp in peak condition. For rookies, the weeks leading up to camp are often about refining technique while maintaining strength and explosiveness, and Golday appears fully committed to doing just that.
While Golday will have to earn his opportunities, his college production, athletic traits and evident work ethic give him a legitimate chance to carve out a role on defense while also contributing on special teams early in his rookie season.
