Detroit Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs finally addressed the media Monday, but his brief comments did little to reveal when he’ll return to the practice field as contract negotiations with the organization continue.

Gibbs missed his fifth consecutive training camp practice while remaining around the team at the Meijer Performance Center. Wearing a gray Lions cutoff hoodie, the three-time Pro Bowler spent much of practice interacting with teammates, including quarterback Jared Goff and wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

As he headed toward the locker room following practice, reporters asked Gibbs when fans could expect to see him back on the field.

“What I’m aiming towards? Ah, I don’t know,” Gibbs said.

The waiting game continues​

Pressed on whether he needed a new contract before returning to practice, Gibbs declined to make his absence about money.

“It’s not about that,” Gibbs said, offering little additional insight before walking away.

The Lions and Gibbs are reportedly working toward a long-term extension that would keep the dynamic running back in Detroit beyond the 2027 season, but no agreement has been reached. Head coach Dan Campbell previously noted that Gibbs had been dealing with “a little bit of a back” issue after completing a conditioning test, though Campbell emphasized the injury was not considered serious.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations, Gibbs continues to receive strong backing from his teammates.

Jameson Williams didn’t hesitate when asked where Gibbs ranks among NFL running backs.

“I wouldn’t even say look at the stats; look at the film,” Williams said. “Nobody close. He’s the best.”

Williams even went a step further, saying he believes Gibbs deserves to become the NFL’s highest-paid running back.

For now, the Lions appear content to let negotiations continue while Gibbs remains involved with the team away from practice. Whether his return comes before a deal is finalized remains unclear, but one thing is certain—Detroit’s offense will be even more dangerous once one of the league’s most explosive playmakers is back on the field.
