The 2025 NFL draft is finally here, which means ESPN's Field Yates released his final mock draft before it all begins. So, who did the Jacksonville Jaguars select?
Over the last week or so, the tide has turned very quickly when it comes to who the Jaguars might select. After months of Mason Graham being the popular pick, Ashton Jeanty suddenly holds that title.
"New Jaguars GM James Gladstone has used the phrase "intangibly rich" during the predraft process," wrote Yates. "Jeanty fits that description as a top-five prospect with rare contact balance, power and explosion. I would personally attack the defensive side of the ball if I were in Jacksonville's shoes, but new coach Liam Coen might want to get quarterback Trevor Lawrence more playmakers. Many around the league believe the Jags are headed in this direction."
A key part of the equation when it comes to getting Trevor Lawrence back on track is making sure he has "balance" around him, as Liam Coen put it.
That means having a scheme that can do some of the heavy lifting to help create opportunities, and additional playmakers around Lawrence--particularly in the running game--so he doesn't have to be Superman on every play.
Jeanty, on his own, with his ability as a ball carrier, would provide that presence with his big-play ability. But there is a notable trickle-down effect to the quarterback and the passing game when there is a strong running game to lean on.
A run game that keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable down and distances can open up the passing game. In addition to that, in Coen's offense, the running game and passing game concepts build off of each other, which in turn keeps defenses off-balanced and guessing.
Jeanty seems to be the clear pick here among many, but there is still some unknown around the Jaguars.
Within Yates' mock, Mel Kiper would also bring up Tetairoa McMillan as an option. Then, earlier this week, one executive told Adam Schefter that Jacksonville is a "wild card." Schefter would then add that the Jaguars are "interested" in trading down, while Ian Rapoport discussed the idea of the Jaguars moving up to pick No. 2.
I think this is exactly what GM James Gladstone wants, because unknowns can create leverage on draft night.
