As we get closer and closer to the NFL draft, the idea of the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the fifth overall pick has been picking up steam among insiders and draft analysts.
In Dane Brugler's recent seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, he had Jeanty going to the Jaguars. Gennaro Filice of NFL.com had the same selection in his recent mock as well.
CBS Sports' draft analyst Chris Trapasso thinks that Jeanty is the pick for the Jaguars, while Daniel Jeremiah also mentioned Jeanty as being a good fit for what the Jaguars are looking for as they reconstruct this roster.
Now, the latest rumblings about Jeanty to the Jaguars are coming from ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, who called Jacksonville a "sleeper option" for the running back.
"I'm hearing that Jeanty is in play for the Raiders among a few options. They're also looking at offensive tackle potentially." Fowler said on NFL Live. " But there is some momentum around the Raiders and Jeanty. I'm told Jeanty would love to play for the Raiders. They are atop his wish list as far as what the player wants; we'll see what the team wants.
"But this is an option that will clearly go somewhere in the top 10 to 12. I haven't talked to one team who thinks he will slip out of that range. In fact, Jacksonville at No. 5 could be a sleeper option for Jeanty as well."
Part of the equation for the Jaguars under head coach Liam Coen when it comes to getting Trevor Lawrence back on track is making sure that he doesn't feel like he has to be Superman on every play.
So, of course, adding a player of Jeanty's caliber to the offense would certainly help take some of the playmaking burden off the quarterback's shoulders. Jeanty was a Heisman Finalist this past season after rushing for a whopping 2,595 yards with 29 touchdowns, while averaging just under 7.0 yards per attempt, per PFF.
But going beyond Jeanty's own production, the trickle-down effect that comes with having a strong running game to lean on is that it keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations. This then, in turn, helps open up opportunities in the passing game as well.
In Coen's offense specifically, the running game and passing game concepts go hand-in-hand and build off of each other, helping to keep defenses off-balanced and guessing, which is going to benefit Lawrence and the passing attack.
"Obviously, there's going to be a lot of changes in verbiage and terminology and all those things, and the system is different," Lawrence said earlier this offseason of Coen's offense. "But I think the run game and how it's built off of that, and I think just his knowledge on how to set up the run game with play-action, screens, and then obviously mixing in dropbacks and shots downfield.
"I think the plan there, I'm really excited about how he's going to set it up and how we're going to game plan it."
