Adam Schefter mentioned Jacksonville Jaguars' running back Travis Etienne among the list of players who "could be deemed expendable" and traded during this week's NFL draft.
Schefter emptied his draft notebook and mentioned that draft week is a busy time for player trades to take place. He then listed 13 players on rookie deals who could be "deemed" tradeable, and Etienne was listed.
Now, the important caveat here is that this isn't a report with Schefter saying the Jaguars are shopping Etienne, but the fact that his name is mentioned is noteworthy.
Etienne is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Over the last two seasons, he has averaged just 3.8 yards per rush, according to PFF, although he's been behind less-than-stellar offensive line play. He's also been featured heavily in the passing game, an element that will be important in Liam Coen's offense.
This is a very deep running back draft class that will provide the Jaguars with plenty of options throughout the seven rounds when it comes to adding to this room.
However, even so, with Etienne on the roster, running back is already a fairly big need with the Jaguars having only three backs under contract currently. Moving on from Etienne only makes addressing this need more pressing.
Perhaps, the scenario where moving on from Etienne would make the most sense is if the Jaguars are planning to spend an early-round pick on a running back, at which point, carries could be hard to come by for Etienne, who could potentially be the third running back on the depth chart at that point.
Naturally, much of the outside focus is on Trevor Lawrence and getting him back on track, but accomplishing that will start with having an improved running game, along with the running back position being active as pass-catchers as well, to help spread the ball around.
With how important the running back is going to be in Coen's offense, this isn't a trade the Jaguars make without having a clear plan in place for who is then going to replace Etienne on the roster.
