Uh, by implying he's the starter, that's basically asking him to work longer and put his body on the line. Yes, the best backups prepare that way, but he's no longer the break glass in case of emergency option. Preparing week to week isn't the same as knowing you're likely play as many games as you can and put your body on the line.

Honestly, it felt like some people were really bothered by it.
Nothing that you said equates to working “longer.” You want to argue putting his body on the line, that has some legs, but this is football. They all do that. Doing it for 3 hours per week more than the backup isn’t crazy. And by your logic every time a starter goes down with injury the backup should then get to have his contract torn up and get a raise equivalent to a starters. That’s not how sports works and that’s not how good businesses are run. You pay for value based on facts and circumstances.

I may have missed it, is anyone angry at Brisset? Or just discussing the situation?
I got a little fed up with all the posts that JB is nothing but a backup QB and doesn't deserve starter money. This may be true but IF he comes out as the starter he should be allowed to have his contract adjusted. We don't know who's going to start yet but currently Minshew will make more this year than JB so I understand why he may want to redo his contract

It doesn't surprise me if he's supposed to start he should be paid more but if he's asking for THAT much then yes it's absolute vintage Cards, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Get out from under Kylers contract(sort of) and immediately have to massively overpay for a guy who was 1-11 as a starter last year.

I think we all know this story, we'll overpay, not what he wants but we'll overpay. And we'll still lose games, we'll give him a guarantee, then the RT we draft way too early will miss a block, JB will get destroyed and miss the rest of the season. The QB will be Minshew, who will be decent but not great. Eventually we'll start the QB we gave up valuable picks to move up to draft, Ty Simpson, and he'll be terrible.
Ladies and gentlemen, 2026 Arizona Cardinals season is officially closed.

This sounds all too familiar

Maybe I’m just too old school, or it’s the attorney in me, but I believe in contracts. You signed for the value you brought and bargaining power you had. If he had beaten out the competition and had as a legit starter for the future I’d say he has leverage. But his leverage is if I hold out you win 2 games instead of 3? Meh. That’s not leverage.

I absolutely agree with signed contracts in the real world, but athletes/sports contracts are renegotiated all the time

Curious your take on this: say brissett was injured in offseason. Minshew goes into season as starter. Should he get a raise? What if minshew injured or retired too? Hold true for Slovis?
Different scenarios.

The Cardinals absolutely plan for Brissett to be the starter. We've seen this scenario play out over the years and most of the time teams give the former backup and presumptive starter a pay bump.

This would be true if both sides honored the contracts, and they don't. I know you're not naive; NFL ownership aren't these benevolent entities, they legitimately screw over players often.

Cards Fans During The Season: JB is the best QB on this roster and the offense hums with him at the helm.

JB In The Offseason: I need some more money in order to be your starting QB.

Cards Fans In The Offseason: JB hasn't won a game to deserve more money and no one thinks he is deserving of a raise.

Can't make this crap up.

The risk of injury goes up with the number of snaps. Moving him to $12 mil is fair. If he wants more trade him. If they could get a 2027 third I’d take it. Brissett work lose the chance to prove he’s a starter. Supposedly his life’s goal.
The only team giving a 3rd for JB is the Cardinals.

Totally agree with you. I always loved the late great Junior Seau. Someone came to him and asked if he was upset with his contract being that he had one more year left and he was outperforming his deal. He said he signed to play for x dollars a year so how could he be upset? He said he would play it out and then seek more money in the next contract.

Leverage is in the eye of the beholder.

I believe in contracts, too. But I'm hard pressed to imagine one that can't be adjusted given changing circumstances and perceived mutual benefit. I can imagine the CARDS agreeing to guarantee his present deal, not simply $1.5m, and adding incentives in 2026.

Early signs of CTE.

So, have learned that Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett not only doesn't have an agent but has never had one. Did he provide the info himself or via an advisor to Ian Rapoport last week about his desire for a new contract? Hmmmm.

Tell me you haven't been a Cardinals' fan very long without telling me...

:biglaugh:
Tell me any other time in the history of the NFL has a 1-11 backup QB held out and demanded a raise/extension.

You people are in total denial on how bad this team is. Kind of like last year with offensive line and people saying it was a top five.

I'll wait

PSA: You can't buy a Brissett jersey in the Cards team shop at all. This was true last year as well.

Going to be a rough year for you Brissett truthers.

Last year you people couldn't help yourselves saying that JB was better than K1.
Then the truth came out that his stats were mostly garbage time waste. Add in the fact he won 1 game out of 12.

Now the dude is asking for a bump in pay and you either saddle up that pony or completely change tune and say he is not worth it.

Rough

If he is asking to be paid like the average QB, that’s too much but if he wants to hit the bottom 20% that’s realistic. The Cards have a rep among players for being cheap. They can afford to make this gesture. They need to start changing their image.
