It turns out the restructured contract quarterback Jacoby Brissett signed with the Arizona Cardinals had almost all of the adjusted money for 2026 in a signing bonus and option bonus, along with a minimum salary of $1.3 million, all of which is guaranteed.
The two-year deal Brissett signed in 2025 called for a base salary of $4.88 million this year with $1.5 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $3.5 million, which was prorated at $1.75 million each year.
For 2026, there was also a $50,000 offseason workout bonus and $30,000 per-game roster bonuses for a max total of $510,000. The salary-cap charge was $9.19 million for this year that included $2 million, which was believed to be for unlikely to be earned incentives reached last season.
In the new contract, that $2 million has disappeared, although it was likely worked into his new compensation. There are also no per-game roster bonuses. However, the workout bonus remains, so it’s possible the Cardinals agreed to pay that money despite Brissett not attending the offseason program except for two days when he did not practice in the mandatory minicamp.
Normally, a player must participate in 80 percent of the offseason workouts to earn a bonus.
The contract officially filed with the league and NFLPA lists the new compensation as $5.8 million in a renegotiated signing bonus and an $8.64 million option bonus for a total of $14.44 million.
There also is, as suspected, one void year that results in the bonus money being prorated at $7.22 million each year in 2026 and 2027. The previous signing bonus proration of $1.75 million still counts against the cap this year.
One odd aspect of the figures listed is that it is said to be worth $15.5 million (as was reported), while actually having a cash value of $15.79 million.
All of that results in a cap charge this year of $10.365 million if the workout bonus was paid. That’s an increase of only $1.175 million from the original number. However, there will be a $7.22 million cap charge in 2027. That will be dead money if he is not with the team. If Brissett signs a new deal with the Cardinals for 2027, that $7.22 million would still carry over and be added to the new contract figures.
Another oddity is the contract listed did not include $5.5 million in incentives that were originally reported when it was said he could earn “up to” $21 million this year.
The only incentive listed is $45,000 for a likely to be earned incentive that isn’t known and counts against the cap immediately and $240,000 in unlikely to be earned incentives that don’t count, but would in 2027 if they are reached. That $45,000 is included in the $10.365 million mentioned earlier.
For clarity, incentives are considered likely to be earned if they are based on something the player accomplished the previous season.
