Feb. 20—BROOKINGS, S.D. — The annual football rivalry game between South Dakota and South Dakota State is getting spooky in 2026.
The game has been moved to Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31 following the Missouri Valley Football Conference's reworking of the schedule after North Dakota State departed the Valley for the Mountain West Conference.
The game will be played at Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings. The game time will be announced closer to the season. Prior to the NDSU departure, SDSU and USD were going to play in the final week of the regular season on Nov. 21 in Brookings.
Each team will play four home games and four road contests in the Valley, now facing all eight other opponents in the conference.
USD's schedule includes opening at Youngstown State on Sept. 26 before hosting Indiana State for Dakota Days on Oct. 3. It's the first of two home games, as Southern Illinois will visit Vermillion on Oct. 10, and the Coyotes will then go to Murray State on Oct. 17.
The Coyotes will host North Dakota on Oct. 24, travel to SDSU on Oct. 31, take a bye week, and then close with a home game against Northern Iowa on Nov. 14 and then wrap the regular season with a trip to Illinois State on Nov. 21.
USD announced its non-conference games earlier this month, hosting Central Connecticut State on Aug. 29, traveling to Northern Colorado on Sept. 5 and hosting Eastern Washington on Sept. 12 before visiting Pac-12 opponent Boise State on Sept. 19.
For SDSU, the schedule begins on Oct. 3 at Illinois State, followed by a home game with Murray State on Oct. 10. SDSU travels to North Dakota for the third straight year due to the schedule change, playing at Grand Forks on Oct. 17 and then will host Youngstown State on Oct. 24 for Hobo Day in Brookings.
Following the Halloween showdown on Oct. 31 with the Coyotes, SDSU will travel to Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois in back-to-back weeks and then host Indiana State on Nov. 21 to close the regular season.
Most of SDSU's 2026 non-conference schedule is complete, with one potential game to add. The Jackrabbits are slated to travel to Northwestern (Ill.) on Sept. 5 for their first matchup against a Big Ten opponent since 2022. SDSU will then host FCS football newcomer New Haven on Sept. 12 at Dykhouse Stadium, and a Sept. 26 home non-conference game against Eastern Illinois is also on the books. according to the visiting Panthers' schedule.
