Italy have broken their own Winter Olympic medal record before the start of the second week at their own Games.
Thanks to the gold triumphs of giant slalom skier Federica Brignone and biathlete Lisa Vittozzi on Sunday, as well as silver for the snowboard cross team and bronze in the cross country relay, the hosts already stand at 22 medals - eight of them gold.
The previous record was set in 1994 in Lillehammer with seven gold medals and 20 medals in total.
Italy’s National Olympic Committee (CONI) had set a target of 19 medals before the start of the Games in Milan and Cortina.
In the medal table, the hosts are in second place at the halfway point of the Games behind Norway.
