Virat Kohli's record in major finals makes him cricket's ultimate big-game player
On a Sunday evening in Ahmedabad, Virat Kohli walked out and did what he has done on the grandest stages of the game for the better part of two decades: chase down a total with composure and finesse.
An unbeaten 75 off 42 balls steered Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a five-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans with 12 balls to spare. That sealed RCB's status among the elites as they became only the third side to defend an IPL crown after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
However, the foundation of Kohli's finals legacy was laid before he turned 25. In the 2011 ODI World Cup Final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, India found themselves in early trouble at 31 for two after losing both Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag cheaply.

A 22-year-old Kohli walked in, settled the innings with a composed 35, and shared an 83-run partnership with Gautam Gambhir that gave India the platform they needed to lift the global trophy after 28 years.
Two years later, in a rain-reduced 20-over Champions Trophy Final against England, Kohli top-scored with 43 off 34 balls in a thrilling five-run victory, again emerging as the difference-maker and the fine margin between winning and losing.
Not every final ended in celebration, but Kohli's individual contributions rarely faltered even when the team came up short.
In the 2014 T20 World Cup Final against Sri Lanka, he produced one of the most destructive innings of his international career, 77 off 58 balls, yet that was not enough to take India over the line.

Nonetheless, in the 2021 and 2023 World Test Championship Finals against New Zealand and Australia, Kohli struggled to bring out his best, and India lost on both occassions.
However, before stepping away from T20 international cricket, Kohli saved his finest performance for the very last chapter. India were in deep trouble at 34 for three against South Africa, when Kohli dug in and produced a majestic 76 off 59 balls. It was his innings that helped India post a competitive total of 176.
India won the match by seven runs, and Kohli earned the Player of the Match award. It was his swansong and he played an innings that would go down in history.

How has Virat Kohli performed in IPL finals?
For years, the one criticism that had genuine substance was Kohli's record in IPL finals. His early appearances told a story of a player trying hard but falling short.
A 7 against Deccan Chargers in 2009, a fighting 35 that could not prevent a heavy loss to Chennai Super Kings in 2011, and the famous 54 off 35 balls in 2016 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, all came in defeats.
Then came 2025, and everything changed. Kohli's 43 off 35 balls anchored a successful chase against Punjab Kings as RCB ended their 17-year wait for a title. And in 2026, against Gujarat Titans, he simply refused to let the occasion get complicated, batting through to an unbeaten 75 and lifting the trophy for the second year running.
