Clemsonfootball heads into the offseason with a real battle forming behind center, and ESPN believes it is one of the situations worth watching most across the country.
After spring practice wrapped up, Dabo Swinney made it clear that Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds have separated themselves from the rest of the quarterbacks on the roster. Vizzina currently holds the edge, but Reynolds’ rapid rise has created plenty of momentum heading into summer workouts and fall camp.
According to ESPN’s Max Olson, Reynolds emerged as the breakout performer of the spring for Clemson. The freshman arrived on campus in January and immediately impressed coaches with how quickly he adjusted to the offense and the speed of the college game.
Swinney has repeatedly praised Reynolds since his signing day, calling him an “elite talent,” and the freshman backed up that hype over the last few months. Olson noted that Reynolds competed with several quarterbacks for the backup spot and clearly established himself as the top option behind Vizzina.
Even with Reynolds generating buzz, Clemson still trusts Vizzina’s experience. The redshirt junior spent the last several seasons learning behind Cade Klubnik and already has meaningful game action under his belt.
Vizzina appeared in 14 games over the past three years and made his first career start against SMU last season, finishing with 317 passing yards and three touchdowns. He has totaled 596 passing yards and four touchdowns during his Clemson career while also contributing as a runner.
Reynolds came to Clemson as one of Arizona’s top prospects and one of the nation’s better dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2026 recruiting class. Before a hamstring injury cut short his senior season, Reynolds produced huge numbers as a junior, throwing for more than 2,200 yards while rushing for over 1,400 more.
The season opener at LSU only adds more attention to Clemson’s quarterback situation. Olson pointed out that playing a road game in Baton Rouge to begin the season could make Vizzina’s experience difficult to overlook, though Reynolds is expected to continue pushing throughout August camp.
Swinney recently said the competition is helping Clemson regardless of who wins the job.
“And either way, we’re going to get better,” Swinney said during an interview with Josh Pate. “If CV holds this kid off, then he’s earned it. If Tait beats him out, because CV ain’t going to back up in the battle. So either way, we get better there.”
