Prior to last night’s game between the Indiana Fever and Los Angeles Sparks, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham came down with back spasms during pregame warm-ups.

Cunningham was initially listed as questionable to play in the contest, but she was ultimately able to take the floor and ended up logging 11 minutes and scoring just two points.

Ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham isn’t certain to play ahead of tip-off. Here’s what we know.

Is Sophie Cunningham playing tonight?

The Indiana Fever’s official injury report lists Sophie Cunningham as questionable to play due to her back spasms.

We should know soon whether or not she will play, but the questionable tag suggests there is a real chance Cunningham will sit out.

We’ll update this page once more information is available.

The fact that Cunningham only played 11 minutes (she’s averaging 22.4 per game this season) and scored just two points on Wednesday night are hints she wasn’t feeling 100%.

Seeing as how this is the second game of a back-to-back, it’s possible the Fever will err on the side of caution and sit Cunningham even if she’s healthy enough to go.

The Sophie Cunningham-DeWanna Bonner drama

Cunningham went viral last month after getting into a pointing stand-off with Bonner in the June 22 game, which led to the internet creating countless hilarious memes.

Bonner did not take kindly to Cunningham pointing at her, and that’s exactly why the Fever guard did it for more than 20 seconds.

“And I was just kind of pointing and she is like, ‘Don’t you point at me,’ and I was like, “Oh, shouldn’t have said that,” and I didn’t say a word,” Cunningham said before re-enacting her pointing at Bonner. “So stupid. Like, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”

“I think it’s dumb, but it was pissing her off and I couldn’t help myself. She was losing her s*** and all I was doing was literally pointing,” Cunningham added.

Bonner and Cunningham didn’t have any issues in the contest between the two teams a few days later, but that was also the game in which Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas hit Caitlin Clark with multiple cheap shots, which got Thomas suspended.

This is the first game since that incident, but we won’t be seeing Clark and Thomas on the floor together because the former has been ruled out after making her return for the Wednesday night contest against the Sparks.

The Fever are being cautious with Clark in the second game of a back-to-back, but she is expected to play on Sunday night against the Las Vegas Aces.
