North Carolina has an extremely unenvious decision on its hands. A second consecutive first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament has thrust doubt into the future of coach Hubert Davis, an icon in Chapel Hill who played under Dean Smith and coached alongside Roy Williams.
Davis took North Carolina to the Final Four in his first season as head coach, spoiling Mike Krzyzewski's final game with Duke along the way, but hasn't been able to replicate that excellence since. The Tar Heels failed to reach the NCAA Tournament the following year after entering as the preseason No. 1, and they've been unable to advance the past two March Madnesses.
With rumors swirling about Davis' future, the latest report doesn't bode well. In an appearance on ESPN's College Gameday, Pete Thamel reports, "The tenor at North Carolina right now is there will be a new coaching staff" next season.
Thamel says North Carolina and Davis will speak soon with a decision not expected until early next week. If the sides indeed part ways, Thamel expects it to be amicable and not described as an outright firing.
North Carolina is keeping quiet about its intentions for now. However, UNC chancellor Lee Roberts told a local NBC affiliate the school will "look at everything."
Change appears to be on the horizon in Chapel Hill.
