When the Vikings traded up for Dallas Turner in the 2024 NFL Draft, some excitement came with that selection. The team had also traded up to get J.J. McCarthy, so the class in general had high hopes, but fast forward a year, and the team is looking for answers from him.
The former Alabama defender enters his second year with higher expectations after a relatively quiet rookie season. Of course, getting overshadowed by the likes of Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard is one thing, but having that done by a UDFA is another. Through the first preseason game, Gabriel Murphy is outplaying Turner after a two-sack performance to kick things off.
The slow start now has the voice of the Vikings, Paul Allen, asking some questions. Speaking on his show on KFAN, Allen asked a question out loud that many Vikings fans have been thinking quietly for a year now.
Allen said, “What do you do with Dallas Turner? I'm just going to lay it out like that. What do you do with Dallas Turner? Where do you play him? How much do you play him? Do you care that he was a first round pick? Do you care that Gabriel Murphy is outperforming him in training camp and the Texans game? Do you care that O'Connell came into the Texans game really, really excited to watch the Dallas Turner performance? And I certainly can say the HC of the Minnesota Vikings thought it was a bad performance. I wouldn't know. I just know that there wasn't a lot said about the old 15 after the Texans game, and there was a lot said about 59. So that would be, I guess that would be the potential proverbial dark cloud on the horizon.”
Is it time to panic with Turner? Absolutely not. Brian Flores is taking it easy with Turner, and when you have two stars ahead of him, you can afford that. If it gets to be November or December and things are still not looking up, then we can start to panic.
