MEXICO CITY — Ecuador bought itself a little more time after winning its last group stage match against Germany, but it was time that was ultimately borrowed.
With its 2-0 loss to Mexico in the round of 32 on Tuesday, June 30, Ecuador has now been eliminated from the World Cup.
La Tri barely avoided elimination in the group stage with a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Germany in their third and final match after disappointing showings against Ivory Coast and Curacao to open the tournament. It was a flash of brilliance for the young Ecuadorian squad, one that gave people hope they could still be the dark horse they were projected to be going into the World Cup.
Instead, the No. 2-ranked team out of CONMEBOL fell flat once again, caught off guard by an uncharacteristically aggressive Mexico team in the first half. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, El Tri parked the bus, going back to Aguirre-ball to close out their opponents.
Mexico is the first CONCACAF team to eliminate a side from CONMEBOL in a World Cup knockout match. It'll face the winner of England-DR Congo on Sunday, July 5 in the round of 16.
Ecuador, meanwhile, is packing its bags.
