Spain became the second team to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals after defeating Belgium in a thrilling quarterfinal clash Friday, July 10, ending Belgium's World Cup dreams.

Spain won 2-1 as a late Mikel Merino goal put La Roja on top for good in the 88th minute. Earlier in the match, Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois left with an injury, paving the way for Spain to capitalize.

Belgium ended Spain's clean sheet for the tournament with a Charles De Ketelaere goal in the 41st minute, but couldn't muster a late equalizer to send the match to extra time.
