The Houston Rockets are projected to finish in 7th place in the 2026-2027 NBA Western Conference. The San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder are the clear favorites, but the rest of the pecking order for the top 8 almost feels like a toss up.
Houston landing in 7th place seems fair, but the teams on either side of them are: the Golden State Warriors to finish in 6th place, and the Los Angeles Clippers to finish in 8th.
Houston is on the rise and improving rapidly: they have one of the the most exciting young cores in the NBA if not the best. Golden State seems to be stuck in the Stephen Curry era, and seem to solely rely on his talent while disregarding most other aspects, while Los Angeles is currently dealing with a James Harden arrest for unlawful possession of a handgun.
With the draft upcoming and big trades being rumored, there are many factors that will have huge impacts on these projected standings. The Warriors have the 11th and 54th overall draft picks; the Rockets have the 39th and 53rd; the Clippers have the 5th, the 36th, and the 52nd. The Clippers have the upper hand in this regard, yet they are projected to finish in 8th in the western conference.
With this being said, the difference between these three teams seems very small, and the final standings will likely come down to a few games of the NBA season. What will be the X-factor that gives the top seeded the edge over the others?
