Jul. 21—WORTHINGTON — The Milroy Irish wasted no time in dispatching the Worthington Cubs in seven innings Sunday to win a game that had big implications in Region 10C seeding.
It was the final day of the regular season and Milroy had a chance to clinch the Gopher League title and a first-round bye in the Region 10C tournament. The Irish accomplished both of those things in their 10-0 shutout over the Cubs.
Milroy was locked into a tight three-way battle at the top of the Gopher League standings with the Luverne Redbirds and Hadley Buttermakers. All three teams actually ended the season with identical records. But Milroy earned the tiebreaker due to a better league record.
The win over Worthington was also a good momentum boost for the Irish, who enter region postseason play on a four-game win streak, which includes a big win over Hadley to help clinch the league title.
After a scoreless first two innings on Sunday, Milroy plated two runs in the top of the third inning.
Noah Knakmuhs led off with a single and Tyler Peterson doubled. A Carson Javers RBI groundout scored Milroy's first run. Back-to-back Worthington errors plated the second run later in the inning.
It was a tough day defensively for the Cubs, who were plagued with eight errors. But defense and pitching did prevent some more runs from being scored earlier in the game before the Irish were able to stretch their lead.
Another Worthington error led to Tyer Maeyaert scoring, starting a five-run frame in the top of the fifth.
An RBI single from Knakmuhs, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Dolan and Dolan later scoring on a wild pitch brought three runs home before another crucial Cubs error capped off the scoring for Milroy to break the game open.
Three more Milroy runs followed in the top of the seventh. Andrew Wallen's RBI single, a Carson Javers sacrifice fly and Mason Javers RBI double helped the Irish end the game in seven innings via the 10-run rule.
10 hits, six walks and six RBIs were totaled by the Irish as Knakmuhs had three hits, three runs and an RBI at the plate. Moses Dolan added two hits and Wallen and Mason Javers added two RBIs.
Maeyaert was superb on the mound, striking out eight and surrendering only three Worthington hits. Connor Lanoue finished out the game for Milroy as the southpaw struck out one.
Kent Lais, Tate Gaul and Justin Saufley each had a hit for Worthington as Max Ostrem started the game on the hill. He struck out two with one earned run in four innings. Daniel Castro and McKinley Bush combined to pitch the final three innings.
Now the Region 10C playoffs are next for both squads as Worthington enters as the No. 7 seed. The Cubs will play the No. 10 Pipestone A's, who they beat twice in the regular season by one run apiece. Game one will be in Worthington Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Game two will be in Pipestone Friday and a potential game three if necessary will be back in Worthington on Sunday.
Milroy meanwhile awaits its first playoff opponent in the second round between No. 11 Heron Lake and No. 6 Jackson. The second round of the Region 10C bracket will start on Wednesday, July 29.
