The Philadelphia Phillies got a dose of tough love from fans when they showed up at Flyers game.
Amid a disappointing season for Philadelphia's baseball team, players from the Phillies took advantage of their own postponed game to attend the Flyers' playoff game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, April 29.
Phillies stars Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto and Jesus Luzardo, among others, were in attendance to see the Flyers defeat the Penguins at Xfinity Mobile Arena and move on to the second round, but Philadelphia sports fans weren't so excited to see them.
When the Phillies were shown on the Jumbotron during the third period, the crowd loudly booed.
"That's awful - they never should have been shown on the Jumbotron," said one fan. "Lack of effort will get you booed all the time in Philly and this Phillies team plays dead. However, the Flyers play hard every shift," wrote another.
The Phillies have struggled to find success on the field this season, currently sitting in second-to-last place in the National League standings, just above the New York Mets. The Phillies suffered a 10-game losing streak this month, their first of that length since 1999.
They currently sit at 11 wins and 19 losses on the season.
Phillies star Bryce Harper addressed the losing streak on April 24, telling reporters, "Yeah, it's not great. Obviously, it's not the spot where we want to be. I've said it multiple times. It's like beating a dead horse, man. We can all say everything the same way every single day. Nobody wants to hear it. We've just got to win. Plain and simple.”
On April 28, the Phillies fired their general manager. Don Mattingly has since taken over as interim manager.
Fortunately for Phillies fans, the team has been able to rally back to win two games in their series against the Giants. They shut out San Francisco 7-0 on April 28 and again beat the Giants 3-2 on Thursday, April 30 in the first of a double header after the postponement on Wednesday.
For the Flyers, meanwhile, after taking down their cross-state rivals in the first round of the NHL playoffs, they'll now wait to see if they'll face the Montreal Canadians or the Tampa Bay Lightning in their next series.
