Iowa wrestling (9-3, 2-1 Big Ten) bounced back into the win column with a big rivalry win at No. 6 Nebraska (9-4, 2-1 Big Ten) on Friday, securing a massive career milestone for head coach Tom Brands in the process.
With the 22-14 victory, Brands now collects his 300th career dual meet win as the head coach of the Hawkeyes. Brands' overall record in 20 seasons at the helm improves to 300-31-1 and 143-16 against Big Ten opponents.
This milestone is yet another impressive stat to add to Brands' illustrious tenure at the helm in Iowa City, which includes five Big Ten Coach of the Year awards (2008, 2009, 2010, 2020, 2021) and three NWCA Coach of the Year awards (2008, 2020, 2021).
Including his 11 seasons as an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes, he secured the 2000 NWCA Assistant Coach of the Year, USA Wrestling Freestyle Coach of the Year twice (2002 and 2003), and the 2002 Walter Camp national Coach of the Year award.
Collegiately, Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92), in which he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. He was also a three-time Big Ten champion, with a career mark of 158-7-2, including an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0).
The Hawkeyes will look to improve Brands' record even further on Jan. 30, when the program hosts Minnesota (10-2, 2-2 Big Ten) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
