Things have gone a bit astray for the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program this year. A program that is traditionally among the best in the entire country has lost its way during the 2025-26 campaign and seen some questions arise as to what the future looks like.
Tom Brands, the former three-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist in 1996, has been with the program since 1993. He began as an assistant in 1993, which he held the position until 2004, and has been the head coach of the program since 2006.
Despite the sustained success, there have been murmurs of the Hawkeyes potentially exploring a change at the top in the ever-changing world of college sports, with the transfer portal and NIL being more important than ever.
Although there have been rumors, Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register has reported that Iowa wrestling expects no coaching changes at the top. Tom Brands is set to stay as the head coach of Iowa wrestling, as athletic director Beth Goetz does not intend to shake things up.
Brands knows things are not going well this year. During a conversation with the Des Moines Register, he went on to describe this season as "the worst year of his career."
Iowa owns a 12-6 record on the year this year, which is well below the standard that Tom Brands and the Hawkeyes have built. It remains to be seen if time will see this program correct itself, or if changes are still looming down the line.
