During his illustrious career leading Iowa State women’s basketball, Bill Fennelly has built a big resume.
He is the program’s all-time winningest coach, has guided the Cyclones to three Big 12 Conference Tournament titles and 23 trips to the NCAA Tournament.
He added another memorable milestone on Jan. 28.
Fennelly became the Big 12’s all-time winningest coach with an 84-70 victory over Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. The victory was the 297th of his Big 12 career, passing former Baylor and current LSU coach Kim Mulkey for first on the all-time list.

Mulkey and Fennelly were tied at 296 apiece after Iowa State picked up a win over Arizona on Jan. 24.
The record is now his. It's another in a long list of accomplishments for the Davenport native who was hired at Iowa State in 1995 and has been rewriting the school's record book ever since. Including a stop at Toledo, Fennelly has tallied 817 career victories, which rank 17th all-time among Division I women’s basketball coaches.
The bulk of his success has come at Iowa State and has guided the program to 10 seasons with at least 25 wins. He was also a three-time finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award. He won Big 12 Tournament titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Tommy Birch, the Register's sports enterprise and features reporter, has been working at the newspaper since 2008.
