The puzzle pieces for the Iowa State men's basketball coaching staff for the 2026-27 are complete.
On July 6, Iowa State and T.J. Otzelberger announced the finishing touches on the Cyclones' coaching staff for the upcoming season.
In addition to replacing former staff members Kyle Green (Northern Iowa) and J.R. Blount (San Diego), who left for head coaching roles, with the hirings of Allan Hanson and Tim Buckley, Iowa State announced the addition of Chuck Ruffing as an assistant coach.
Richardson Maitre and Fletcher McGarvey were also added as graduate assistants. Returning staff members Thomas Pollard was moved to director of recruiting, while Diante Garrett was named director or player development.
Ruffing joins Buckley, Hanson and holdovers Nate Schmidt and Erik Crawford as assistant coaches.
He was most recently an assistant at Western Illinois for a season, his Division I breakthrough. In the previous two years before that, he was a head coach at junior college Bryant and Stratton College in Wisconsin, where he compiled a 52-17 overall record and helped the school make its first NJCAA national tournament in the 2024-25 campaign.
Ruffing also had Division III assistant coaching stints at Marian, Wisconsin Lutheran and Rockford.
As for the two graduate assistant additions, Maitre spent two seasons as a player at Indian Hills Community College, the same school that produced standout sixth man Curtis Jones, before heading to Florida Atlantic for two years. He played his last two years of college basketball at Samford and played professionally in Spain and Portugal before transitioning to coaching.
Meanwhile, McGarvey was promoted to graduate assistant after three seasons as a manager at Iowa State.
