Most analysts have penciled Iowa in for a win in its season-opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5. On paper, it makes a lot of sense why.

The Hawkeyes are an upper-half Big Ten team, with future NFL draft picks on both sides of the ball. The Huskies are making the move to the Mountain West Conference next season and will have a new head coach as well. Despite that, this game may not be as black-and-white as many originally thought.

The Huskies made a major addition to their roster on Friday, landing quarterback Taron Dickens out of the transfer portal.

Northern Illinois has signed Western Carolina QB transfer Taron Dickens, a source tells @247Sports.

Dickens, who signed with North Carolina earlier this offseason, threw for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns against just 2 INTs in 2025.

Dickens transferred in from Western Carolina, where he had a monster sophomore season in 2025. He completed 74.2% of his passes for 3,508 yards and an incredible 38:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The 5-foot-11 signal-caller landing with the Huskies is an insane feat of its own.

Dickens originally committed to Bill Belichick and North Carolina back in February. He was only in Chapel Hill for a few months before being released from his contract and re-entering the portal. The main speculation was that academics played a role in his contract ending.

Regardless of the reason why his time at North Carolina was short-lived, Dickens immediately became the most highly-coveted quarterback in the portal. And now he's landed with the Huskies and will most likely start on September 5 inside Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa should and still will be the favorite to win that game. But a brand-new defense that's replacing a lot of talent will now get an immediate test. Dickens will be one of the more talented quarterbacks the Hawkeyes play in 2026. This game will be a bigger challenge than initially anticipated.
