Inter Milan & Dutch Wingback Opens Up On Ecuador Horror Show: “Now Looking For Excuses, I Have To Do Better”

Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries reflected on his disappointing display in the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw against Ecuador.

Speaking to NOS via FCInterNews, the 29-year-old reiterated his ambition to return to form after a lengthy injury layoff.

Five months on the sidelines took a toll on Denzel Dumfries during March’s international break.

Despite providing an assist in the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Norway, the Nerazzurri star flopped against Ecuador last time out.

Indeed, he picked up a red card in the 12th minute, condemning his side to a frustrating 1-1 draw in Eindhoven.

However, it’s worth noting that Dumfries has only made two Serie A starts since returning from injury last month.

Therefore, his lack of competitive form is hardly surprising, although he remains determined to regain his best level.

Needless to say, regular first-team action will be crucial if Dumfries is to recapture his sharpness and confidence on the pitch.

“We were in the lead, so we were enjoying ourselves until that red card,” Dumfries said after the match. “It was a terrible moment; I need to do better. The ball bounced in a tricky way. I initially wanted to pass it back to Mark Flekken.

“However, then it bounced off my knee; that’s all I can say. In a regular World Cup match, it would have been a clear red card. Today, it was up to the referee whether to give it or not. It’s a friendly, and, of course, you want to play eleven versus eleven.”

“I’m not someone who looks for excuses,” the former PSV player added. “When I saw that long ball, maybe I could have positioned myself behind Stefan de Vrij sooner to buy some time.

“It’s a shame what happened. You never want to leave the field, certainly not so early. I can only learn from this mistake.”
