Once again, Buffalo Bills Brandon Beane traded up in the 2025 NFL draft. On Day 3, Beane moved up 23 spots to select Kentucky defensive tackle Deone Walker.
Buffalo was in search of a one-tech defensive tackle, and they found him in Walker. Walker is 6-7, 330 pounds. Walker will slot in nicely next to Ed Oliver. While Walker played more snaps as a 3-tech lineman last year, he will most likely see more time as a 1-tech with the Bills. The Bills selected TJ Sanders yesterday, who could see time as a 1-tech and 3-tech lineman as well. The selection of Walker gives the Bills even greater depth on the interior of the line.
In addition, Buffalo's drafting of Walker gives the Bills options with the veterans on the roster. Ed Oliver will see the majority of time as the 3-tech tackle. Buffalo can experiment a bit, seeing where DeWayne Carter and Larry Ogunjobi fit best within their defensive alignments. Furthermore, this puts some of DaQuan Jones' usage in question, as Walker could cut into the veteran's snap count.
Walker had a great tenure for Kentucky. He was named a Freshman All-American and earned All-SEC Freshman honors. He broke out during his sophomore season, earning distinction as a second-team All-SEC player. In 2023, Walker totaled 55 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. Walker regressed a bit during his junior year, recording 37 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Even so, Walker was still recognized as a third-team All-SEC lineman.
Walker was also a two-time captain for the Wildcats.
Walker is a massive body who can move fluidly. He has great movement for a player of his size. Sanders dropped down draft boards a little bit because his 2024 campaign was not as memorable as his sophomore season. In addition, Walker will clean up some technical elements in his game.
