On Friday, Chris Fedor, a beat writer for the Cleveland Cavaliers, said on the "Wine and Gold" podcast that the Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers have discussed the framework of a trade that would send De'Andre Hunter to the Lakers. Hunter, 28, has historically been a viable 3-and-D forward, but his shooting splits are very low this season.
The framework of the deal that was reportedly discussed, according to Fedor, involves Rui Hachmura, a key Lakers forward whose contract will expire at the end of this season, and second-year wing Dalton Knecht. There is reportedly also a third team involved in this potential deal.
It is sometimes hard to discern whether reports of this nature are true or merely a smokescreen. According to two NBA insiders — Marc Stein and Jake Fischer — the Lakers' interest in Hunter has been "overstated," although discussions have happened between Cleveland and Los Angeles.
Hunter is 6-foot-7 and has a wingspan of 7-foot-2. He has a career mark of 36.5% shooting from 3-point range and was at 40.5% from that distance last season, but this season, he has made only 30.8% of his 3-point attempts. He has one more season after this one remaining on his contract, and the belief is that L.A. wants to preserve salary cap flexibility in order to be able to go after Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.
The NBA's trade deadline is at 3 p.m. New York time on Thursday, Feb. 5.

"League sources say that the Lakers’ interest in Hunter, meanwhile, has been repeatedly overstated this week. The teams have certainly talked during this transaction cycle, but the purple and gold are reticent to jeopardize their upcoming financial flexibility in the offseason by absorbing Hunter’s $24.9 million salary for next season."
