Just several days ago, Chris Fedor, a beat writer who covers the Cleveland Cavaliers, reported that the Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers had discussed the framework of a trade that would've sent De'Andre Hunter to Los Angeles. According to Fedor, Rui Hachimura was also involved in that framework.

Two NBA insiders — Marc Stein and Jake Fischer — then reported that the Lakers' interest in Hunter was "overstated." The forward was ultimately traded to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the Lakers apparently did show interest in Hunter, but it was conditional, as they also wanted to send out forward Jarred Vanderbilt in the same deal.

"League sources said, for example, that the Lakers’ preliminary interest in De’Andre Hunter centered on whether Jarred Vanderbilt could be included in a deal, because Vanderbilt is owed $12.4 million next season and has a $13.2 million player option in 2027. Acquiring Hunter strictly for expiring contracts would have cost nearly $25 million in future flexibility."

Vanderbilt continues to be an effective energy player off the bench for L.A. this season. But after showing some signs of improving his 3-point shooting in December, the offensively limited forward made just 20% of his 3-point attempts in January.

The Lakers are thought to want to keep as much salary cap space clear for this summer so that they can make a serious run at two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, or perhaps multiple complementary players. While it is unknown if the Lakers are a team Antetokounmpo would like to play for, Stein wrote that they will be a "very viable threat" to land the Milwaukee Bucks superstar if he isn't dealt before Thursday's trade deadline.
