An NFL insider revealed when not to expect a contract extension for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, on Saturday's episode of SportsCenter, provided the latest details on the future between the reigning NFC South champions and their starting passer. And according to Fowler, there probably won't be any movement on a long-term pact any time soon.
"The feeling league-wide is that he will play out his fourth year and not get a new deal this summer, but everybody seems to be okay with that," Fowler reported, per Julia Stumbaugh of Bleacher Report. "The Panthers love Young, but they are in a little bit of a wait-and-see mode with him. They just want to see him put it all together."
Young put a little of it together in 2025, where he passed for career-highs in yards (3,011), touchdowns (23), completion percentage (63.6) and passer rating (87.8). The former No. 1 overall pick also helped lead the Panthers to their first NFC South title since 2015.
He has not, however, played consistently great football throughout the course of his three-year career—as he's thrown for at least 250 yards in just seven of his 44 starts.
Carolina exercised the fifth-year option on Young's rookie deal this past spring, which will take him through the 2027 campaign. But if Young wants to stay around beyond that, and get paid handsomely for it, then he'll have to take another step forward in 2026.
"He's been erratic at times. He's been really good at times," Fowler also noted. "He's been a closer late in games helping them get to the playoffs. If he can do that again and put together some more consistent passing performances, he's in line for a big-time payday."
