The Atlanta Falcons are wrapped up with their mandatory minicamp period, and with it, their offseason program has come to a close with the next time they take the field being the start of training camp.
So far, the most dominating story of the offseason has understandably been the quarterback battle which could be brewing between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. The coaching staff has done their best to cool things off since Penix has not really gotten a real shot to prove himself due to his ongoing knee recovery, but this has still worked in Tagovailoa's favor.
Since Penix has not been cleared for 11 on 11, Tagovailoa got essentially all of the first team reps in minicamp. Even though Penix should be healthy for training camp, at least one major insider believes it's Tagovailoa's job to lose.
During an appearance on NFL Live on ESPN, Louis Riddick said he believes Tagovailoa will win the job if he can stay healthy.
"When you think about how [Stefanski] wants to run this offense with a big emphasis on the play action passing game, with a big emphasis on getting the ball to his all world running back...that's gonna be something that's just gonna do nothing but help Tua," Riddick said. "I think Tua is kind of tailor-made for this offense. I'm putting my money on him winning this job. If he can stay healthy, all things being equal, I think he’s the better fit for the offense that [Stefanski] ideally would like to run."
Depending on who you ask, you may get 100 different answers on what the true status of this quarterback battle is, but Riddick is confident in that Stefanski and this coaching staff does not have any loyalty to Penix.
In an ideal world, Penix would be the franchise quarterback after spending a high first round selection on him, but Stefanski will not try to fit a square peg in a round hole if he does not think he's the right guy for the offense.
Ultimately, the staff does not have the answers right now until Penix is fully healthy and gets his chance, but Tagovailoa has absolutely made a statement over these last few weeks. If that continues into training camp, it would not be a surprise to see Atlanta wind up sending him out there as their Week 1 starting quarterback.
