Pretty much every prediction we've seen regarding the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback competition is picking Tua Tagovailoa to come out on top. It makes plenty of sense, given his edge in experience, his better fit for Atlanta's new offense and his far-superior accuracy on the field compared to Michael Penix.
The latest entry in this genre comes from Matt Okada at NFL.com, who is betting on Tua's health and scheme fit over Penix's down field abilities. However, there's a catch to this take. He thinks Tagovailoa will start Week 1, but also predicts Penix will take over around mid-season if Tagovailoa is not impressing.
It's an interesting take, and entirely possible if Tua winds up regressing to the level we saw him playing at last season with the Miami Dolphins. The only reason that the Falcons should make a switch at quarterback mid-season is if Tagovailoa suffers another concussion or some other serious injury.
Trying to force Penix back into the lineup just because they used a lot of draft capital on him would be a mistake. If Penix winds up winning the summer QB battle, then so be it. Either way, head coach Kevin Stefanski should make one decision at quarterback and stick with it for the entire season.
After all, Stefanski's inability to stay with one quarterback is likely what cost him his job in Cleveland. We'll see if he has learned his lesson in 2026.

"Penix has preferred to throw downfield and outside the hashes, relying on his receivers' catch-point skills, while Tagovailoa thrives on quick-hitters over the middle in the short and intermediate areas, weaponizing his receivers' YAC ability. Stefanski's offenses leaned more toward the latter strategy in Cleveland recently, and Tagovailoa also holds the (current) health and experience cards. PREDICTED OUTCOME: Tagovailoa starts Week 1; Penix takes over by Weeks 6-8 if Tagovailoa's not helping the team win games."
