As Josh Downs put it when talking with the media on Tuesday, he has "high expectations" for Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver AD Mitchell in his second NFL season.
"He's an excellent football player," Downs said via Locked on Colts. "AD is incredible. I got high expectations for him. I think he's really, really good. He had a really good spring. I'm excited to see what he does out here. A phenomenal player and all the potential in the world. I'm just excited to see him do it out there."
It was a rocky rookie season for Mitchell, who experienced drops, mistimed routes, and wasn't always on the same page with the quarterback. When it was all said and done, he caught just 45% of his targets for 312 yards and in some games, was the fifth wideout on the depth chart in terms of snaps.
However, what's been evident since Day 1 is Mitchell's ability to create separation, which in the midst of last season's ups and downs, is something that we also saw on display. In fact, by ESPN's "open metric," Mitchell ranked top 10 among all wide receivers.
Mitchell's athleticism and route running abilities make him a player who can impact all levels of the field and do so in a variety of ways.
Oftentimes, it is during a player's second season where we see them make the biggest jump, and Mitchell appears primed to do just that, given how the offseason programs unfolded. Now, it's about building upon that performance and with continued consistency.
"AD's had an exciting start to the offseason," said offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. "He's really been playing good football out there. Getting open, making catches."
