The Indiana State baseball team fell 9-1 to Wake Forest on Sunday in a rough outing in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
ISU struck first as Caden Miller doubled down the left field line to score Carter Beck in the bottom of the first, but it was all Wake Forest from there as the Demon Deacons scored two in the second, three in the third, two in the fifth and then one each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to reach 10.
It just wasn't a good day for the Sycamore pitching staff, especially as the Wake Forest pitching staff tallied 15 strikeouts in the victory. Grant Parson went three innings and gave up five runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two.
The Sycamores put up a bit of a fight in the ninth inning as Andrew Ortiz was hit by a pitch and then Nomar Garcia walked to give ISU two baserunners with just one down. Wake Forest decided to go with a pitching change in an effort to get out of the game without any additional damage on the scoreboard. But the Sycamores were able to load the bases as Beck was hit by a pitch. Emil Estrella came up next in an effort to do some damage to make the loss hurt just a bit less. But Estrella popped up and that was the game.
Beck led the Sycamores with a hit and a run scored. He also stole a base.
With the loss, the Sycamores exit the Puerto Rico Challenge with a 1-2 record as they head to Coral Gables, Florida to take on the Miami Hurricanes at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
