AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tyrrell Hatton picked up where he left off.
A year after his best finish (T-9) at Augusta National, the Englishman is in contention again after an opening 69.
This marks his ninth start at the Masters.
“It's just so hard,” Hatton said of the course. “It's like, you love being here and it's very special, but at any moment you can hit a shot and it does your head in. I just need to keep hitting perfect shots.”
The LIV golfer, known for fluctuation in temperate, was asked if he’s practiced his on-course patience.
“I think it depends what side of the bed I get out of,” he said. “Obviously today was a good day.”
Hatton started hot, opening with a birdie on No. 1, and made the turn in 33.
He briefly touched 4-under before a late bogey on No. 17.
“Naturally, I'm disappointed with making bogey,” he said of his lone dropped shot. “I don't feel like I did a huge amount wrong there. But that's kind of this place. You don't really have to do anything wrong to drop shots.”
Hatton was pressed about Scottie Scheffler’s 68 and whether or not he’ll pay attention Friday to the leaderboard.
“Just trying to focus on myself,” Hatton said.
