The Houston Cougars are rightfully favored against the Illinois Fighting Illini, but this could be better than any Elite Eight game.
My Illinois vs. Houston predictions and these March Madness picks trust the favorite on Thursday, March 26.
Houston: The location alone should tilt this wonder heavily toward Houston. But so should experience. In a matchup of two fairly even teams, the Cougars feature three starters with experience in last year’s national championship game.
The Illini, by contrast, have just one rotation player with recent NCAA Tournament experience—reserve center Zvonimir Ivisic, who made the Sweet Sixteen with Arkansas last season.
The rumors of the demise of the Houston Cougars’ defense have been greatly exaggerated. By efficiency metrics, it should be considered no worse than the No. 4 defense in the country.
It is a defense particularly designed to frustrate the Illinois Fighting Illini. Houston holds opponents to 31.4% from deep. The Illini need their 3-pointers to be falling to hang with quality opponents.
Illinois ranks No. 15 in the country in 3-pointer frequency, taking them on more than half its field-goal attempts. Thus, the Illini rank No. 26 in percentage of points coming from beyond the arc.
If and when Houston turns off that spigot, the Cougars should cruise in what is effectively a home game.
Houston is best praised for its guards. The backcourt trio of Milos Uzan, Emanuel Sharp, and Kingston Flemings provides pretty much every offensive asset a team could want. But do not forget about Joseph Tugler.
He is arguably the best defender in the Sweet Sixteen; his versatility alone can tilt games. A sprained ankle in last year’s Final Four limited his effectiveness in the national championship, perhaps costing Houston the title. No one has more motivation right now than Tugler.
Expect him to largely erase David Mirkovic on Thursday night, removing Illinois’s best inside presence.
Both these teams play slow; Illinois in the bottom quarter of the country in pace, and Houston is among the 15 slowest teams. But they are also both guard-driven, and the Illini shoot 3-pointers on more than half their field-goal attempts.
If Illinois is trailing in the second half, some urgency could propel this game Over no matter how slow the first half may have been.
