A recent mock draft from Fantasy Life offered a wild idea where the San Francisco 49ers make a splash and trade up into the top five in Round 1 of the NFL draft.

In that mock, the 49ers are moving up to grab Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. That's not a move San Francisco should make. However, a trade up shouldn't be entirely out of the question for the 49ers. They just need to be prudent about what players they're jumping up to grab.

Warren is not in the group of players the 49ers should move up for. He's a big, talented tight end with a diverse skill set that seems to perfectly fit San Francisco's offense. There's not enough of a need there to justify dealing draft capital to move up and take him. In fact, tight end is the one position the 49ers have actually invested this offseason. They signed TE Luke Farrell to a three-year deal with $11 million guaranteed. They're also in line to extend TE George Kittle. Specifically trading up to draft another TE would be a wild use of their resources.

If the 49ers do move up, the two players they should be doing so for are Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham or Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter if one of those players start to slide.

Graham, the consensus top DT in the draft, could fall because of his less-than-elite measurables. Carter, the consensus top DE, could slide because of a foot injury that's limited his ability to work out pre-draft.

The 49ers badly need to bolster their defensive front. That has to be their No. 1 priority in this year's draft. It's not a requirement they find a player there in Round 1, but if they're not taking a DL in the first round, they can't be giving up draft capital on Days 2 and 3 where it will become imperative they find quality players at that position.

On the other hand, if they're making a splash with Carter or Graham and filling their top need with one of the draft's top players, it's easier to justify giving up the capital later in the draft to make that move up.
