A move back in the 2025 NFL draft may be the best strategy for the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers are in an awkward spot in the draft order at No. 11 overall. Unless a top-10 player unexpectedly slides out, they may be in a spot where they're over-drafting a player at a position of need or grabbing a player who doesn't necessarily fill a substantial need.

By trading back, the 49ers would be able to get to a place where perhaps they're getting better value with the player they select. They'd also be gaining more draft capital to help reload their roster with young, affordable talent. San Francisco is slated to have 11 picks. It would behoove them to walk out of the draft with more than that.

While a trade back isn't guaranteed, there could be a couple of teams interested in moving up.

One team they could call about a move down is the Denver Broncos. Pro Football Network circled the Broncos as a team that could be looking to trade up for wide receiver help for quarterback Bo Nix.

Via PFN:

Sean Payton wasn't shy about moving up draft boards to go and get his targets during his time with the Saints and I don't think there's any reason to think that changes now that he has a franchise signal caller under center.

In the past, his offenses prioritized quick hitting passes and efficiency -- what better way to support such a scheme with a natural athlete in Tet McMillan that is capable of winning at multiple levels and creating mismatches?

Denver is scheduled to pick at No. 20, so a move up to 11 would cost some significant draft capital. However, if McMillan falls out of the top 10 and the Broncos identify him as a player they need to have, they may be willing to pay the price to move up ahead of teams like Dallas or Indianapolis who could be in the mix for McMillan.

The other interesting team the 49ers should have an eye on is the Pittsburgh Steelers. There are a couple ways they could come into play. If Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders drops out of the top 10, the Steelers may be eager to jump up and snag him. Pittsburgh has also been busy visiting with running backs before the draft. If Boise State's Ashton Jeanty slips out of the top 10 and the Steelers view the position as a big enough need, they may be willing to leap ahead of the Cowboys at No. 12 to select a game-changing back like Jeanty.

It wouldn't be a surprise if San Francisco is active in trying to trade down in this year's draft. They may go as low as the 20s. Perhaps they're only able to make it back a couple of places. Their history in trading back even one spot indicates they'll find a deal if they're motivated to pick up some draft capital with a move down.
